about

In the enigmatic realms where sound becomes sorcery, and obscurity is an art form, the enigmatic Filip Bukrshliev Trio emerges with their sophomore release 'All the Sad Words in the Beggar's Dictionary'. Set for release on October 13, 2023, this opus is an invitation to a shadowy musical soiree, where boundaries blur, and the distinction between light and dark fades into oblivion. At the helm of this enigmatic voyage is Filip Bukrshliev, a Macedonian composer, guitarist, and improvisator, known for his work in formations like Taxi Consilium, Yordan Kostov Quintet/Ensemble, Svetlost + Odron Ritual Orchestra, Strog Post, Aspirin Moon, Setstat and Fighting Windmills. Bukrshliev's musical tapestry defies conventional description. It's a labyrinthine fusion of contemporary free jazz and post-rock aesthetics, a dark alchemy that thrives in the shadows. The trio, itself a triumvirate of shadows, includes the shifty orchestrator, Filip Bukrshliev, the "first lady of Macedonian jazz" Andrea Mircheska on double bass, and Slavcho Kocev, who conducts percussive rituals that resonate through the corridors of consciousness. This eerie expedition follows the trail blazed by their debut 'A Disc Jockey's Crisis of Conscience' (2021). 'All the Sad Words in the Beggar's Dictionary' is an audial séance, beckoning listeners to decipher its arcane codes. This sonic puzzle melds the cerebral with the visceral, challenging the listener to decode its cryptic language and embrace the dissonant beauty within.

All of the themes on this album (with the exception of #3) are composed in late 2022, in the small lakeside village of Trpejca (Трпејца [tr̩ˈpɛjt͡sa]; 40.9606° N, 20.7830° E; the self-proclaimed 𝑆𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑡-𝑇𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑧 𝑜𝑓 𝐿𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑂ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑑) during the dead hours of the off-season, on a white (more specifically: Olympic White) Fender 𝐽𝑎𝑧𝑧𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟 (borrowed from Nikola Gugovski) while residing, for the sake of perfect symmetry, in the lovely 𝑉𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑎 𝐹𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑝 (each of the rooms comes with a TV and free barbecue facilities, as advertised). The weather was fairly pleasant given the time of the year, while the temperature of the water was a mostly enjoyable 18°C (64.4°F). The one fish available on the menu of the landmark restaurant Рибар (meaning: Fisherman) was always done to perfection. This may come as a somewhat bold culinary claim, but certainly one that is easily verifiable by the local 𝐹𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑆𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑠𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑑 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝐶𝑜𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑠. The small library (due to limited storage space) that was brought along for the stay, thus giving birth to some of the titles on this album, consisted of: 𝐿𝑖𝑏𝑟𝑎 by Don DeLillo; 𝐵𝑙𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐸𝑑𝑔𝑒 by Thomas Pynchon; 𝐹𝑒𝑟𝑑𝑦𝑑𝑢𝑟𝑘𝑒 by Witold Gombrowicz and 𝐹𝑖𝑐𝑐𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠 by Jorge Luis Borges. The arrangements and the pre-production were done in early April 2023, in the city of Veles (Велес [ˈvɛlɛs]; 41.7165° N, 21.7723° E; in Slavic mythology Veles, also known as Volos, is the king of departed souls) in a house next to Шумско Радио Велес (meaning: Forest Radio Veles, a now defunct local radio station). During the stay there we were blessed with the company of a vaguely Bulgakovian cat, aptly named after a dubious Serbian folk star. The name was bestowed on her because of the general inability to achieve intonation while attempting to sing and the natural disposition for climbing on top of the table in the middle of the room. The recording, mixing and mastering of the album was done in late April 2023, in Skopje (Скопје [ˈskɔpjɛ]; 41.9981° N, 21.4254° E; the third most polluted city in the world) in a fairly straightforward manner. 𝐴𝑙𝑙 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑎𝑑 𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑑𝑠 𝐼𝑛 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐵𝑒𝑔𝑔𝑎𝑟'𝑠 𝐷𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑎𝑟𝑦 is specifically designed to expose itself as fun in the exact moment you find yourself offended and brought to the conclusion that 𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝐽𝑎𝑧𝑧.
